The OliMAT from Lifetaq has the power to revolutionize the entire pharmaceutical industry. By combining various functionalities in a single machine, Lifetaq is taking cell cultivation to a new level. As a result, drugs can be tested faster, better, and more efficiently, and animal testing can be made obsolete or significantly reduced globally.

Johannes Geisler supports the startup Lifetaq with his industrial design expertise for the OliMAT, which features a modern, modular, futuristic design language. The product is characterized by its modularity, which Geisler Design deliberately emphasized both in terms of design and appearance. Vertical LED dividers emphasize the modular structure, creating a futuristic appearance. This modularity allows for flexible, unlimited cell cultivation, module upgrades, or reordering, allowing customers to cultivate customized cells and test medications under perfectly hygienic conditions. The housing for the pilot machine and pre series was built together with the team of  Lifetaq and Aspekt Development from Vienna.

HOW TO CREATE IMPACT?

Challenge
Countless animal experiments are conducted worldwide on mice, etc., in “preclinical tests” that last for years and are ultimately evaluated in humans.
Often, after years of clinical trials, it turns out that the drug doesn’t work as expected, and the team is left empty-handed. The gap between humans and animals is large — the “translational gap”— and countless animals have lost their lives for nothing, or scientists have lost years of work. Furthermore, only a few drugs can be tested at a time due to severe resource constraints. AI will enable many more drugs to reach the preclinical phase, which can no longer be achieved with current “manual” methods.
Solution
To reduce the translational gap between animals and humans and save time, Lifetaq invented the Olimat, a machine for 3D cell cultivation.
This allows drugs to be tested in advance using real human cells. Furthermore, many more drugs can be tested, animal testing is significantly reduced, and customers can thus reduce the translational gap and test drugs under perfectly hygienic conditions with the modular machine.

HOW TO DESIGN IMPACT?

Design Challenge
The design challenge was to transform a technically functioning machine into a design that appeared hygienic, clean, and modern, and that reflected the revolutionary technology.
Furthermore, the handling and user experience were limited by the purely technical and scientific approach. Furthermore, the modules were of different sizes, and the refrigerator was located outside the machine. The design had to be designed in such a way that technical updates could be implemented and added later.
Design Solution
The machine was designed modularly so that modules can be added and updated later, depending on the customer’s needs.
The modularity was emphasized by vertical dividers and LED light strips. Furthermore, it is cost-neutral to manufacture, easy to maintain, and has been significantly optimized for handling. The white color gives the machine a modern, futuristic, and clean appearance, reflecting Lifetaq’s positive strategic direction. The vertical dividers allow for easy maintenance thanks to hinged modules.
